Perplexity can shorten the route from a broad business question to useful sources. The important work is turning those sources into evidence your team can challenge and act on.

A polished market summary can still support the wrong decision
Imagine an established service business is considering a new maintenance offer for customers across Yorkshire. The management team wants to know how large the opportunity is, who already serves it, what customers care about and whether the offer should be tested.
A tempting first question is: "Research the Yorkshire maintenance market and tell me whether we should enter it."
Perplexity can search the web, combine material from several sources and return a cited answer. The result may look like a compact consultancy report. There will be competitors, trends, market figures and a confident conclusion.
That conclusion is not the decision. The word maintenance may cover several different services. Published market figures may describe the whole UK or a neighbouring category. Competitor prices may exclude setup, support or contract conditions. Public reviews may overrepresent customers who had a particularly good or bad experience.
Perplexity is useful because it helps the team find and connect public evidence quickly. It becomes risky when the speed and polish of the answer hide uncertainty that would have been obvious during slower manual research.
The goal is not to collect an answer. It is to build an evidence pack that shows what is known, what is only directional and what the business still needs to learn directly.

Write the decision brief before opening the search box
Useful research starts with the decision it needs to support. Without that boundary, every new source creates another interesting branch and the session turns into a very efficient way to avoid choosing anything.
For the maintenance offer, the decision might be whether to fund a six week discovery and sales test in two Yorkshire towns. That is much narrower than deciding whether the entire market is attractive.
- Decision: what must the team choose after reading the research?
- Audience: which customers, buyers or users are actually in scope?
- Geography: which country, region or town matters?
- Period: how current must the evidence be?
- Definition: what is included in the market or service category?
- Evidence standard: which claims need primary or official sources?
- Output: what table, summary or recommendation should be produced?
- Exclusions: which nearby questions belong in a later piece of work?
The brief should state the audience, geography, time period, service definition, evidence standard and output. It should also name exclusions. If the business only serves organisations with 20 to 200 staff, information about consumers and large enterprises may be interesting but irrelevant.
This gives Perplexity a better job. Ask it to help locate evidence for a defined decision, not to make the decision on the business's behalf.

Turn the brief into a question tree
One large prompt encourages one large summary. A question tree keeps the work inspectable. Split the decision into areas that can be researched and challenged separately.
The first pass should map the territory. Ask for the main service categories, buyers, competitors, regulations, substitutes and recent changes, all within the defined geography and period. Treat this as a list of research routes rather than a list of facts.

The second pass follows the branches that matter. If three sources suggest customers struggle with response times, ask which sources support that claim, which customer segment they describe and whether newer evidence agrees. If a competitor appears to offer a low price, ask what is included, when the page was updated and whether the figure is a starting price or a complete contract cost.
Perplexity sessions retain conversational context, so follow-up questions can build on earlier findings. Keep returning to the decision brief. Context is useful, but it can also carry an early misunderstanding through the rest of the conversation if nobody corrects it.

Use Perplexity as a source navigator, not the source
Perplexity's citations are the useful starting point. They let the researcher move from a generated statement to the page that is supposed to support it. A citation is not proof that the statement and source match perfectly.
Open the important sources. Check the original wording, publication date, geography, sample, definition and commercial interest. A market report written by a supplier may contain useful data while also favouring the problem that supplier sells. A news article may accurately quote a study but leave out the method. A search result may still surface an old page with a current-looking title.

Use the strongest available source for the claim. Official statistics, regulators, legislation, company filings and original research normally deserve more weight than summaries. Company websites are good evidence of what a competitor publicly claims. They are not independent proof that the service delivers that result.
Reviews, forums and social discussions are valuable for language and hypotheses. They do not automatically represent the whole market. Ten detailed complaints can reveal a problem worth investigating without proving that most customers have it.

Record evidence outside the conversation
A long research session can feel organised because the conversation remembers earlier questions. It is still a poor place to manage the final evidence.
- Claim: the exact statement the decision may rely on.
- Source: the original page, report or dataset.
- Date and scope: when, where and who the evidence describes.
- Confidence: confirmed, supported, directional or unverified.
- Decision impact: what this finding could change.
- Open question: what still needs another source, interview or test.
Create a simple evidence table in the working document or spreadsheet. Give every material claim its own row. Record the source, date, geography, confidence, relevance to the decision and any open question. Link to the original page rather than only the Perplexity session.
For example, the team might record that four competitors publish a response-time promise, but only two explain the service level and neither shows the full contract price. That is more useful than writing "fast response is standard in the market". The evidence and the gap are both visible.
This also makes review easier. A colleague can challenge one row without rerunning the whole research session. When a source changes, the team knows which conclusion may need updating.

Challenge the answer before it becomes a slide
Once the first evidence table exists, use Perplexity to attack it. Ask which claims rely on one source, which sources disagree, which definitions have been mixed and what evidence would weaken the emerging conclusion.
Ask for the strongest case against entering the market. Then ask which part of that case is factual and which part is inference. If the same market figure appears across several articles, check whether they all trace back to one original report. Five citations can still be one piece of evidence wearing five different jackets.
Perplexity's Research mode is designed for more involved work. Current product guidance says it performs iterative searches, reads many sources and produces a structured report. That can accelerate a broad investigation, but the output is still a research draft. More searches do not remove problems in the underlying sources or decide which uncertainty the business is willing to accept.
The useful review question is not "Does this look thorough?" It is "Can we trace the important conclusion to evidence that actually supports it?"

Do not confuse public discussion with customer research
Public reviews and discussions can reveal the words people use, the complaints they repeat and the alternatives they compare. This is useful preparation for customer interviews, surveys and sales conversations.
It is not a replacement for them. The people posting publicly may not match the chosen customer group. Quiet customers may have different priorities. A review explains one experience after a purchase, while the business may need to understand why another buyer did not purchase at all.
For the Yorkshire offer, Perplexity might surface repeated comments about slow response, unclear pricing and weak reporting. Turn those into interview questions. Ask potential customers how they handle the problem now, what triggers a change, who approves spend and what evidence they need before trusting a provider.
Secondary research tells the team where to look. Primary research tells it whether the problem exists for the people it hopes to serve.

Set the data boundary before adding internal files
Market research often starts with public information and then drifts towards sales notes, customer lists, pricing models, contracts and internal strategy. That changes the risk.
Perplexity's current guidance says consumer account activity may be used to improve its models unless the user opts out in settings. It says Enterprise data is not used for AI training and has different retention and administrator controls. Check the current plan, settings, privacy notice and company policy before uploading anything sensitive.
Use the least information needed. A research question normally does not need customer names, personal contact details or an unpublished contract. Remove identifying information, use summaries where possible and keep commercially sensitive calculations in approved systems.
Do not paste confidential context into an AI tool merely to save time writing a careful question. The research pack should make its sources traceable without making private business information travel further than necessary.

Finish with a decision note, not an AI report
The management team does not need every source and every prompt in the meeting. It needs a short note that separates evidence from interpretation.

Summarise the confirmed facts, directional signals, assumptions and material unknowns. Explain which sources were strongest and where evidence disagreed. Then recommend the smallest next step that can reduce the important uncertainty.
For the maintenance offer, the evidence may support a limited test rather than a full launch. The team might interview ten suitable customers, publish one clear offer page and run a small outbound campaign in two towns. The goal is to test the buying problem, price and response before committing to wider delivery capacity.
That recommendation did not come from Perplexity alone. The tool helped find public evidence and challenge the research. The business still chose how much confidence it needed and what it was prepared to risk.

Use faster research to ask better questions
Perplexity can remove a great deal of tab opening, source discovery and first-pass summarising from market research. That is useful work to shorten.
The time saved should be spent where the business adds value: defining the decision, checking evidence, speaking to real customers and designing a proportionate test.
Return to the Yorkshire maintenance offer. The initial broad question has become a traceable evidence pack, a list of uncertainties and a small market test. The team has not pretended that public web research can predict the future. It has used it to make the next decision less vague.
That is the sensible role for Perplexity in market research. Let it accelerate the search. Keep the judgement, evidence standard and final commitment with the people responsible for the business.

- Has sensitive information stayed within the approved data boundary?
- What is the smallest next action that reduces the biggest uncertainty?
