Freelance software developer UK

Work directly with the person understanding and building your software.

I help UK businesses improve important systems and turn useful ideas into bespoke web applications, integrations and controlled AI-assisted workflows.

Two useful ways to start

Improve what the business already relies on or build what needs to exist next.

You do not need to decide the technology before speaking to me. Bring the operation, application or idea and I will help work out the smallest sensible route.

Improve existing software

Bring me the system that is holding the work back.

I can understand the current application, spreadsheets, integrations and workarounds, then improve, connect or replace the parts creating the most pressure.

Build something new

Turn a useful idea into working software.

I help define the goal, users, workflow and first valuable release, then stay hands-on through design, development, launch and support.

Freelance software development services

Business software, web applications and AI that earn their place.

My work sits between consultancy and delivery. I can understand what the business needs, challenge an oversized idea and remain hands-on through the practical design and development that follows.

Bespoke business applications

Web-based systems designed around the roles, information and decisions that make your operation work.

Customer and staff portals

Secure places for people to submit information, manage work, share documents and complete important tasks.

CRM and workflow systems

Practical tools for enquiries, customers, jobs, notes, ownership, approvals and delivery progress.

Laravel and Vue development

Senior hands-on development for production web applications, new features, upgrades and technical improvements.

APIs and system integrations

Reliable connections that move approved information between the software your business already uses.

AI workflow automation

Controlled use of AI for suitable document, language and information tasks, with review and failure handling built in.

Discovery and working prototypes

Requirements, realistic journeys and working demonstrations that reduce uncertainty before a larger build.

Application takeover and support

Assessment, stabilisation, maintenance and continued development for important existing software.

One accountable working relationship

The advice and the implementation stay connected.

Many consultants can advise but cannot build. Many developers can build without understanding what the business needs the software to achieve. I work between the two and remain directly involved in both.

Direct working relationship

You speak to me about the business problem and work with the same person responsible for the technical delivery.

Business-led decisions

The architecture and feature priorities follow the users, workflow, risk and commercial result the system must support.

Maintainable engineering

Clear structure, sensible conventions, testing and documentation so the software can be understood and continued.

Controlled access and data

Permissions, validation, backups, security and human review are treated as part of the working system.

A visible route into delivery

From a business problem to software people can rely on.

Each stage reduces uncertainty and leaves the business with something useful before more time and budget are committed.

  1. 01

    Understand

Learn the business goal, current operation, users, information, constraints and risks.

  2. 02

    Shape

Choose the smallest useful route and make the workflow, responsibilities and first release clear.

  3. 03

    Build

Deliver working progress in short stages so real feedback can influence the next decision.

  4. 04

    Own

Launch carefully, support the system and improve it using evidence from the people relying on it.

Speak to Danny

Questions businesses usually ask.

Are you a freelance software developer or a software agency?

You work directly with me, Danny Mills, as the Business Software Consultant and Developer responsible for understanding and delivering the work. DanJMills is my personal professional identity and a trading style of OrbitWeb Ltd, which is the legal supplier used for agreements and invoices. I can bring in suitable specialist support where an agreed project genuinely needs it without creating a sales or account-management layer between us.

What kinds of freelance software projects do you take on?

I focus on practical web-based business software. That includes portals, CRM-style systems, registration and onboarding, documents and approvals, dashboards, calculators, APIs, integrations, AI-assisted workflows and improvements to existing Laravel or Vue applications. I am best suited to work where understanding the operation matters as much as writing the code.

Can you provide AI development as part of a bespoke software project?

Yes, when the task is a suitable use of AI. I can use language models for controlled work such as document extraction, classification, summarising, drafting and finding missing information, then connect that task to the wider application. The design should define permissions, test cases, review points, logs, costs and what happens when the output is uncertain or wrong.

Do you use AI to write the software?

I use modern development tools, including AI assistance, where they help me explore, implement or review work efficiently. I remain responsible for the requirements, architecture, security, testing and delivered code. Faster code generation does not replace understanding the business or checking that the software behaves correctly.

Can you work with our internal team or current software supplier?

Yes. I can deliver a defined area of work, strengthen requirements, review important decisions or provide senior hands-on development alongside an existing team. Responsibilities, repository access, review and handover are agreed clearly so the engagement improves the delivery rather than adding another dependency.

Do you only work with Laravel and Vue?

Laravel and Vue are my strongest and most frequent application stack, supported by PHP, TypeScript, MySQL and established hosting and deployment tools. I choose the technical route around the business need and existing system. I will recommend configuration, integration or another suitable approach when a new Laravel and Vue build is not the sensible answer.

How does a freelance software engagement begin?

Start with the business pressure, existing system or software idea rather than trying to prepare a complete specification. I will recommend the smallest useful paid next step. That may be a focused review, requirements and discovery, a working prototype, an application health check or a clearly defined development phase.

Who owns the source code and business data?

For client-funded work, the agreed deliverables belong to your business once the relevant invoices have been paid. Repository access, data, hosting, third-party services, reusable components and handover responsibilities are made clear before development begins.

Can you support the software after launch?

Yes. An ongoing arrangement can cover managed hosting, backups, monitoring, security and dependency updates, practical support and controlled feature development. I can also document the system and hand it over cleanly to an internal team or another suitable supplier.

Where in the UK do you work?

I am based in Greater Manchester and work remotely with businesses across the United Kingdom. I can also arrange on-site discovery, process and stakeholder sessions across Manchester and the wider Greater Manchester area where meeting the people doing the work will improve the outcome.
